Greetings Bixby Community!

Monday, October 10

We've received many calls this past week asking if October 10 was a holiday for the LBUSD. October 10 is not a recognized holiday. School will be open on Monday October 10. Students not in school will be marked absent.

Attendance

Why school attendance matters…

Increasing student attendance is crucial to improving academic achievement. Too many absences, excused or unexcused, can keep students from succeeding in school and in life. Missing just two days per month can cause a child to fall behind.

How families can support good attendance…

1. Establish a routine for bedtime and for the morning.

2. Choose clothes and get backpacks ready, including homework, the night before.

3. Set an alarm with enough time for your child to wake up, get ready, and eat breakfast to arrive at school 10 minutes before school begins.

4. Encourage your child to go to school unless he/she is truly sick.

5. If your child is absent, make sure that you inform the school and provide verification for the absence. 6. If your child has a chronic health condition, sign a release of medical information, and develop a health plan to encourage communication between the physician and the school.

7. Be aware of the school calendar and plan family trips during school holidays and/or winter and summer breaks.

8. Schedule medical and dental appointments after school or during school holidays.

9. Check on your child’s attendance regularly; call the school or check online, if applicable.

10. Notify the school immediately if you are having trouble getting your child to school.

I've included a graph in the bulletin that shows Bixby's unexcused absences for the month of September. Our goal is to have the top bar grow to 375 for the month of October. However, we know we can't do it without you. We appreciate your partnership.

SSC Voting

We are now done accepting nominations for School Site Council. Voting for the nominees begins today, Sunday, October 9, and ends on Friday, October 14. A special thank you to all those who were nominated. Now the voting begins. You may access the ballot here. Good luck!

Please find a list of candidates with their candidate statements in the weekly bulletin in the texted version of the message.

AM Supervision Reminder

1st & 2nd Grade parents and guardians, I'd like to express my gratitude to you for helping with ensuring our students go to the supervised side of the playground between 7:30a-7:57a. I'd also like to thank you for exiting the campus at 7:57a. Leading up to last week, our campus clearance times were around 8:10a. This past week, you got it down to 8:04a. What a huge difference! Remember the TK/K is the only hand-to-hand drop off. Grades 1-5 students may walk directly to the supervised portion of the playground and they will be dismissed to their lines at 7:57a.

Let’s have a great week!

Go Beavers!

Public Notice

We are required to post a Notice of Public Hearing pursuant to Education Code Section 60119, to address the sufficiency of K-12 textbooks and/or instructional materials in reading/language arts, including English language development, mathematics, science, including laboratory equipment for grades 9-12, history-social science, health, and foreign language aligned to content standards and consistent with the content and cycles of the curriculum frameworks adopted by the State Board of Education. Per Education Code Section 60119, sufficiency means that each student, including English language learners, has an approved textbook, or instructional materials, or both, to use in class and take home. Please recall that on August 18, 2021, the Board approved an alternative certification process that provided teachers the option to certify that all students have access to their core textbooks and/or digital access to the district’s curriculum documents and/or digital textbooks.

Good evening Bixby Family,

School Site Council

School Site Council (SSC) will be accepting nominations for the 2022-23 school year. Two (2) SSC parent member seats are vacant for this current school year (2022/23). Members can serve up to two (2) years, but no less than one. Check the Smore email for access to the nomination form. If you are not able to access the nomination form and wish to complete it, please stop by the office for a paper version.

Alternative Income Forms

The Business Office is using School Messenger (phone, e-mail and text) to request that families complete Alternative Income Forms for the 22-23 school year. These forms are accessed through ParentVue, with portions of the student information preloaded. The LBUSD will be reaching out to the families that are not directly certified by the state and/or have not completed a meal application. Completed forms are extremely important to keep our LCFF Supplemental and Concentration funding levels.

Student Arrival

This is a friendly reminder that after 8:00 am, we close our gates to minimize learning interruptions and maintain the safety of our campus. As soon as the bell rings, my team and I begin to clear the campus and direct all visitors to the Office doors. If you are running late, please expect to have one of our team members greet your child at the door and escort your student to class. Our gates open as early as 7:30a daily.

Student Safety

Recently, we've had questions about whole-class food deliveries to the classroom during the school day. Because of dietary allergies and/or restrictions, we want to discourage whole-class food deliveries during the school day. We'd also like to encourage parents to communicate to their children to refrain from sharing food with one another while at school.

Language Program Request

Prop 58 (2016) requires districts to establish a mechanism for parents to request a variety of language acquisition programs, including bilingual/native language classes. This flier explains the process for parents and will be posted on the Dual Immersion Website.

Spirit Wear

Don't forget to order your Bixby Spirit Wear! We have a new design in Navy, Hunter Green, and Gray. All orders will ship directly to the school and be delivered to your child's classroom. Order now, the store closes on October 2nd.

A link to the store is available on the homepage of the PTA website: https://bixbypta.org/

Have a wonderful week,

9/20/22

Greetings Bixby Community,

We have another full week of great things happening at Bixby.

TK/Kindergarten Dismissal

Remember that tomorrow the full-day schedule begins for TK/Kindergarten. Students will be attending school from 8a-2p on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. We will continue with our hand-to-hand drop-off and pick-up.

Dismissal Times

Speaking of dismissal times:

  • TK/K release at 2p (Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays)

  • 1st-3rd Grades release at 2:05p (Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays)

  • 4th-5th Grades release at 2:10p (Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays)

  • All students are released at 1:30p on Thursdays.

  • District-wide Minimum Days, all students are released at 1p

Back-to-School Night

Back-to-School Night is on Thursday, September 22 from 5:30p-7p. Thursday is a District-wide Minimum Day. School dismisses at 1p on Thursday. During Back-to-School Night, we will meet in the auditorium at 5:30p and then you will be dismissed to visit your child’s classroom. Teachers will open the door to their classrooms around 5:45p and begin their presentations around 5:50p. I will make an announcement to switch classrooms around 6:25p. A couple things to note regarding Back-to-School Night:

  • The event is not a time to have a conference about your child. It is a time to learn about your child’s educational program. If you are interested in having a conference about your child’s academic progress, Bixby will be hosting progress-monitoring conferences in November.

  • In keeping with the Dual Immersion Guiding Principles, your child’s Spanish teacher will not speak English in front of their students; so, we strongly encourage you to make arrangements for childcare, if you’d prefer to listen to your child’s teacher’s presentation in English.

Long Beach Transit

I’ve received a couple of messages from Long Beach Transit to provide a warning that their Division of Parking Enforcement will be patrolling the bus stop on Stearns and Stanbridge and fining vehicles stopped at the bus stop. If you are dropping students off, we encourage you to drop off on Stanbridge.

Nutrition Services

Americans waste 3x more food than there are mouths to feed. This food winds up in the landfill and harms our planet by emitting methane (which is 25x as potent as CO2!). Bixby Elementary School has partnered with Copia, a food recovery technology, to ensure all our surplus food is being donated to nonprofits right in LA County to share with those who need it most. Helping our community to have their next meal covered, allows them the monetary and mental bandwidth to get medical care, employment, housing, and more. Together, Bixby Elementary School and Copia are committed to making a difference for people and the planet. To date, we've donated 381 meals to nonprofits which have saved 2K lbs of CO2 from being emitted from landfills and saved 45.3K gallons of water by repurposing these meals.

Spirit Wear

Don't forget to order your Bixby Spiritwear! We have a new design in Navy, Hunter Green, and Gray. All orders will ship directly to the school and be delivered to your child's classroom. Order now, the store closes on October 2nd.

9/12/22

Greetings Bixby Community!

Here are the things to know for the week:

VIPS

Parents/Guardians interested in becoming VIPS can apply here. The feedback we get regarding the application process is that it’s too long. It’s true that the process is deliberate, but that’s intentional. We want to ensure that all our volunteers are vetted properly so that your children are safe. Once your clearance is processed, we will contact you.

Traffic

As I’m out throughout the school day, I’ve been noticing that parents are parking in the red zones and also blocking driveways. At this point, our traffic mitigating procedures involve opening two gates along Stanbridge and two gates on Stearn and providing a supervised playground as early as 7:30a. We want to encourage you to exercise positive neighborliness and want to help by providing early access to the playground.

Playground Access

We invite you to drop off your 1st-5th grade student on the upper playground (playground on the Stanbridge side). A Rec Staff will be there to supervise your student. The 1st-2nd grade playground is not open until 7:57am. Also, 1st-5th grade drop-off is not hand-to-hand. You may say goodbye to your babies at the red line--they’re in great hands!

Parking Lots

Please remember that the Stanbridge Parking Lot is for staff only. Please do not encourage your child to walk through the lots, as the safety of your child is our number one priority.

Now Hiring!

The LBUSD has some job opportunities available. If you know of anyone interested, please share this link with them.

LBUSD Parent & Student Guidelines

Please access LBUSD Parent & Student Guidelines here

Cafeteria Menu

You may access the week’s meal menu here

PTA Meeting

The Bixby PTA will be holding its first association meeting on Tuesday, September 13 at 6:30p in the Cafeteria. Childcare is available. Masks are not required, but highly recommended. For more information click here

Have a wonderful week!

Best,

Atentamente,

Sr. Vieyra
